WORKSHOP: Write Your Race Card Story

We can say so much in six words.

In 2010, American journalist Michele Norris created The Race Card Project, creating a space where people share their ideas on race and racial identity. More than 500,000 personal narratives, from all 50 US states and 96 countries have been collected. “In 2013, the Race Card Project was awarded the prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in electronic communications for turning a pejorative phrase into a productive dialogue on a difficult topic.”

This Sunday, join me to write your Race Card Story. Over the years, as I’ve shared my story in a local high school, I have invited the students to write their own Race Card Stories. One by one, as they shared, I was deeply moved by their courage, vulnerability and authenticity. It opened up beautiful and often heartbreaking conversations around racial identity and racism.

As a White woman, writing my Race Card Story helped me name my place in the human story.

As a writer, I love the exercise's simplicity. At the same time, it opens up important reflections and conversations.
